Maurice was a stray cat who could no longer be cared for by his owner. He was surrendered to Safe Haven in February 2026. He required neuter surgery, which resulted in a serious complication that required a short stay at an emergency veterinary hospital for treatment. Thanks to the quick action and excellent care of the shelter and veterinary hospital, Maurice made a full recovery and is now feeling great! He is a true survivor with a second chance at life.
Maurice (aka: Gangster of Love) is the kind of cat who makes you feel welcome the moment you walk in the room. This handsome black-and-white long-haired boy will call when he hears you coming and trot right over to greet you, curious about his visitor and ready to spend some time together. Maurice loves being near people and will often follow you around the room like a quiet little shadow, simply happy to be part of whatever you're doing. He has a wonderfully calm, laid-back nature that makes him an easy companion to have around.
During playtime, Maurice enjoys wand toys and playful banter, but he keeps things gentle and relaxed. Most of the time he prefers to lounge nearby, chirping softly and purring when you stop to give him a neck scratch or a few pets which he loves. He is very personable and snuggly, and has been known to jump up on a volunteer’s lap, head butting for more pets and attention. A couple of Pounce moist treats or Squeeze-ups will make his day even better.
When the visiting is done, Maurice climbs onto his favorite cat tree for a cozy nap, completely content after spending time with his people.
He is a super sweet, affectionate, and easygoing cat who will happily keep you company without demanding the spotlight. Maurice hasn’t had the opportunity to meet the other cats at the shelter, so his compatibility with them is unknown. However, given his personality with humans, we believe he has all the qualities to get along with an older, calm cat.
Note: Maurice came through his earlier medical scare with flying colors, and during this time the veterinary team also discovered two underlying asymptomatic conditions - mild asthma and a slightly enlarged left ventricle of his heart. He does not require any medication at this time, just close monitoring to ensure his daily breathing is normal and overall health is good. These conditions do not affect his day-to-day life at all - he remains a playful, energetic, and happy cat who is enjoying life to the fullest!
Maurice will do well with someone who will give daily interactive play and plenty of companionship. He is great with people, and would do best in a calm home with adults only who can comfortably monitor his respiration, and note any changes over time. With a little awareness and a lot of love, Maurice is sure to be a wonderful companion!
