Meet Butternut Squash

Some cats are cute.
Some cats are special.
And then there's Butternut Squash... who is basically a tiny, fluffy miracle wrapped in fur.

Butternut is about 1.5 years old and appears to be a long-haired Persian mix, but honestly he looks more like someone accidentally hit the "shrink" button on a very fancy cat. Because of congenital hypothyroidism and dwarfism, Butternut will always be short, stocky, and delightfully pint-sized. Think: permanent kitten meets fluffy potato.

His journey to get here hasn't been easy. Butternut arrived at animal services dragging his back legs, and initial radiographs showed no fractures. When he came into our rescue, further testing revealed his congenital hypothyroidism. He started a simple, inexpensive daily medication to regulate his thyroid, and we also treated him for possible neurological FIP just in case.

And then... something incredible happened.

He started walking.

Slowly but surely, our little miracle boy began using those back legs again. Today Butternut can get around just fine-he's just a little slower and lower to the ground than the average cat. You won't find him scaling your counters or launching himself onto the top of the fridge, but you will find him doing the things that matter most: snuggling, loving, and being ridiculously adorable.

Because he loves feline friends so much, Butternut must go to a home with another social cat who can be his buddy and show him the ropes.
