American Shorthair and Snowshoe Cats Available for Adoption

Coquito is a 1-year-old trusting, kind, shy, and independent boy who is slowly learning what it means to feel safe while discovering the comforts of indoor life. He was dumped in a cardboard box with three other cats hours before NYC was hit by a devastating snowstorm- thank goodness that our rescuer discovered them in time.

Coquito is a beautiful fellow, with all the trademark features of the Snowshoe breed. We do not do genetic testing and have to assume that he has mixed parentage, as rescued cats often do. But he is a captivatingly handsome fellow. Coquito has taken time to come out of his shell, and we suspect an abusive past. We are looking for a home that has experience with very shy rescue cats that need patient trust building and space.

Coquito is independent and does not like to be excluded from the action. Once he acclimates, he’s happiest having free reign of the home and will become anxious if kept in small spaces. He will thrive with space, patience, and the freedom to settle in on his own timeline. He would do best in a calm multi-cat home without children, where he can continue building confidence, enjoy playtime, and share quiet moments with his people.

Despite all that he’s been through, we can see glimmers of his personality starting to shine through. He’s a chatty cat who isn’t shy about expressing himself and loves finding the funniest places to nap — a high perch in the closet, the top of a dresser, or anywhere he can climb up and survey his world. Vertical space is a must for this little observer.

Coquito will make a great companion and we are looking for adopters who understand that he may not be a lap cat — at least not yet. What he needs most is someone patient who will simply keep him safe and allow trust to grow naturally. Coquito is looking for a home where he can be himself, and be loved unconditionally for it.
