Have you ever gotten home from KFC to find you're one wing short in your bucket? Well, Mr. Lucy can relate. Meet Mr. Lucy, the one-winged lovebird who is probably the sweetest, most patient bird anyone at STAR has ever met.
Mr. Lucy came to us with a wound on his wing that was very obviously bothering him. A trip to our partner vet confirmed that Mr. Lucy had a mass, and that the wing would need to be amputated. The surgery went well, and Mr. Lucy is recovering well! The biopsy of the mass showed that it was non-cancerous. Mr. Lucy's biggest hurdle is finding his balance again.
Because of his poor balance and inability to fly, Mr. Lucy requires a cage setup that is more compact, with plenty of perches to traverse by foot. He feels most confident on skinny perches that he can grip with his whole foot.
But don't let his lack of wing fool you into thinking he is lacking any personality. He loves watching aquarium videos on his tablet, and his favorite toys are ones he can pull bits of paper or string out of like confetti-- and why not? Life is a party!
Mr. Lucy is loves to eat his pellets, but is especially partial to Bird Street Bistro chop. The verdict is still out on fresh fruits and vegetables-- apples, blueberries, grapes, and other produce have left much to be desired. However, he does enjoy a freeze-dried veggie!
Mr. Lucy is still shy around fingers, but he's working up his confidence. He'd rather climb into an offered hand-cup or settle in on your shoulder while you read or watch television. He's a fairly quiet bird, but when he has demands (especially for more food and snacks), he will let you know! His sweet chirps would be a fine noise-level for a home with shared walls.
Speaking of bedtime, Mr. Lucy has his routine down pat. His foster "parront" covers his cage with a blanket when it's time to go to sleep, and he settles right in for a cozy beak-grinding session in the dark. When he's ready for bed and the cage isn't covered yet, he will fuss to remind everyone that he needs his beauty sleep in cozy, covered darkness!
If you think your home could be a good fit for Mr. Lucy (and if you think you can cater to his strict bedtime routine), Mr. Lucy would love to meet you.
