Cockatoo Birds Available for Adoption

Sugar May is a beautiful girl with a big personality. She is about 25-28 years old with at least 2 prior homes before coming into FOTA's care. In one of her earlier homes Sugar was living at a garden centre where she experienced neglect and possibly abuse or punishment. Because of this it can take her some time to trust you, but once she does she wants to spend every minute with you!

When she came into care we started working on some training to make her transition to a new home even smoother. In her foster placements Sugar has practiced stepping up and going home to her cage, as well as made huge progress with improving her diet, learning target training, flight training, and playing with people and independently. She is one smart girl!

She can be a bit of a picky eater, but is on a diet of a veggie and grain chop and Tropican Lifetime Formula pellets. We would recommend continuing a pellet and veggie based diet for her. She also likes fruit which she gets in small amounts and protein like chicken, turkey, egg, and fish (cooked, not seasoned).

Sugar like other Cockatoos has a tendency to display more hormonal behaviours than other species. Because of this proper handling is important and necessary to keep her happy and healthy. We have recently tried her on a Lupron injection to see if that makes a difference in the level of hormonal behaviour we have seen. She is not territorial and rarely aggressive (with permission based interactions and slow movements when close to her she has no issues), nor does she regurgitate, but has been seen spending some time at the bottom of her cage trying to nest (getting under newspapers) and can be stubborn if trying to dissuade her.

Sugar would do best in a home with Cockatoo experience. She is incredibly gentle and sweet, but there will be a transition period while she learns to trust you (she is quite skittish at first). Because of this we are offering a 3 month foster to adopt placement to help make sure Sugar has found her forever family.

Sugar's adoption fee is $800.00.
