Pug Rescue of New England (PRoNE) is a non-profit 501(c)(3), all volunteer foster home based rescue organization.
MEET CALZONE!
Six-year-old Calzone is one of the sweetest, most gentle souls you’ll ever meet. He was rescued by Pug Rescue of Korea in August 2025 from a pet nursing home after his elderly owner heartbreakingly had to surrender him due to financial hardship. As a result, Kal, as his foster dad has nicknamed him (K for South Korea), experienced some neglect, but his loving foster mom, Kim, patiently nursed him back to health with the care, medical attention, nourishment, and love he so deeply deserved.
In March, Calzone made the big journey to Los Angeles, where he stayed in foster care before traveling once again—this time to Boston with his foster mom. Despite all of these transitions, Calzone has remained incredibly sweet, gentle, and trusting. He has adapted well to the other dogs in his current foster home and confidently finds his way around familiar spaces.
Calzone has visual impairment due to pigmentary keratitis. To manage this condition, he will need eye medications administered twice daily for life, along with routine veterinary follow-up. His future family will need to be mindful of his limited vision, especially in unfamiliar environments, and ensure his outdoor space is safe and secure. Calzone needs assistance navigating stairs, so we are seeking a home with minimal stairs or a caregiver who can help keep him safe and carry him when needed. Kal was needing Apoquel for some itchy skin prior to coming to New England. So far, he has done well without it. It will be important to keep a good eye on his skin and coat for any issues to arise.
This special boy absolutely loves people and forms a strong bond with his primary caregiver. He enjoys being close—often snuggling beside his person—without needing to be constantly on top of them. He has not exhibited any separation anxiety, but he has been in a home with regular companionship. We would love to see him in a family where he would not spend long stretches alone. He walks nicely on leash, though his handler will need to watch for obstacles like curbs or low branches. Those who have cared for visually impaired dogs know it quickly becomes second nature to navigate the world together, and Calzone, like all dogs, relies on his other senses far more than his eyesight.
Calzone is house trained and also uses a pee pad! He has used crates in travel and is not averse to them but prefers being with and sleeping with his people.
Calzone fans will be happy to know he also loves car rides and eagerly hops in, ready for his next adventure. He has met cats at the vet and was unfazed by them, and we believe he would do well with older children thanks to his gentle and easygoing nature. He’s just starting to show interest in toys, though one of his favorite ways to interact is playfully mouthing hands.
Calzone is a truly special dog looking for a compassionate, attentive home where he can feel safe, loved, and cherished for the rest of his life.
Ideal Adopter Qualities for Calzone
Calzone will thrive in a home with an adopter who has a big heart and a gentle, attentive approach to care. His ideal family would include:
Patient and compassionate – Someone who understands that a visually impaired dog may need extra reassurance, guidance, and consistency.
Pet companionship
- Could be an only pet or enjoy the companionship of another mellow small dog. Cats will likely be ok, as is always the case, depends on the cat.
Experienced or open to learning – Prior experience with special-needs dogs, or vision-impaired pets is a plus, but not required. A willingness to learn and follow medical routines is essential.
Committed to medical care – Able to administer lifelong eye medications twice daily and keep up with routine veterinary follow-ups. Cost of eye medications approximately: $75/ 2 months depending on where they are purchased. Continue flea tick and heartworm preventative measures.
Safety-minded – Careful about hazards like stairs, curbs, uneven ground, and outdoor environments; able to assist or carry Calzone if and when needed.
Low- to moderate-activity household – A calm, stable home that matches Calzone’s gentle energy level.
Appropriate home setup – A home with minimal stairs or the ability to safely manage stair access.
Respectful family environment – Ideally with older, gentle children who can understand how to interact calmly and kindly with him.
Calzone doesn’t need perfection—just consistency, kindness, and a home where he can feel safe, secure, and loved for the rest of his life.
