MY STORY: Calathea came to CBHS through a partnering rescue organization.

Calathea is the kind of dog who quietly waits for her person, the one who will see her not for her fears, but for her heart.

At almost six years old, this gentle girl came to us through a partnering rescue, carrying with her a story we may never fully know. What we do know is this: Calathea is incredibly sweet, submissive, and full of love to give. And yet, she’s also a little unsure of the world. New experiences and sometimes even certain kinds of touch—can make her nervous. Not in a harmful or aggressive way, but in a soft, hesitant “that scares me” kind of way.

Despite everything, Calathea adores attention. She leans in for affection, seeking connection, wanting so badly to trust. She just needs someone patient enough to meet her where she is, to show her, step by step, that she’s safe now.

Calathea would thrive in a calm home without small children, with people who understand that love doesn’t have to be overly hands-on. She enjoys being petted and will happily accept affection, but quick movements, reaching over her, or touching sensitive spots like her belly can make her uneasy. She needs a family who will respect her boundaries and give her space to feel safe, offering gentle, predictable affection and understanding that trust is built over time. After spending so long in the shelter system, she hasn’t had the chance to build the confidence she deserves—but with the right family, that could change.

She’s not looking for perfection. She’s looking for kindness. For someone who will look into her beautiful brown eyes and say, “You’re home,” and mean it.
