Shaz, our 8 month old 42 pound pitty, struggles with first impressions. We can totally relate. Shaz is a bit awkward and shy. Shaz is fantastic with second and third impressions, though. She just needs someone willing to get there with her!
Shaz was found stray and was so scared at the shelter that she wouldn't even walk. We've had Shaz for over two months and she's really come out of her shell. Although contemplative, once Shaz is comfortable, she is goofy, playful, gentle and 100% sweet.
At home, Shaz is potty trained, perfectly crate trained and does well when left alone. She is great with other dogs, both small and large, and is not leash reactive. Shaz has also been respectful of cats (mostly observing them from a distance). Her hobbies include stick destruction, full body hugs, and playing with her housemates. Out and about, Shaz is mastering leash skills.
Like a lot of pitties, Shaz has a scary bark. She will bark at new people coming into her space until she's sure they are safe. Although not at all aggressive, the bark may be alarming to children, so we don't recommend little kids in Shaz's home. Shaz makes friends easily with patience and treats, but we suspect Shaz would be stressed out in a house with a lot of strangers coming and going. We started Shaz on Prozac to help with her fear, and it's been helping. This medication is cheap and we recommend Shaz continue it for at least 6 months. As we always say, there's no shame in needing a little pharmaceutical help.
Shaz thrives with positive reinforcement and loves to be told she's doing things the right way. She needs to live with someone as gentle as she is who will let her go at her own speed. We also think Shaz would do best in a home with another confident playful dog; she's happiest with a buddy.
Shaz is heartworm negative and current on her flea and heartworm preventatives. Her adoption fee is $250. Due to her breed, Shaz must be adopted by a home-owner or someone with written permission from their landlord. Apply at www.stumptownstrays.org
