Meet Toby. He's a survivor, and he's ready to be your best friend.
Toby holds a unique and unfortunate distinction in Underdog's history: he was the youngest dog they've ever had test positive for heartworm. But don't let that slow you down, because it has barely slowed him down. Toby has completed his heartworm treatment and is well on his way to a full recovery. He just needs rest and restricted activity until mid-July before he's cleared to live his best life.
What Toby needs most right now is a calm, quieter home where he can continue to heal. A busy apartment environment proved a bit overwhelming for this curious, energetic boy, but in a foster home with other crated dogs nearby, he's settled in beautifully, with not a peep from his crate. Turns out, Toby just needs the right environment to show who he really is.
And who is he? A lovable, floppy goofball who will make you laugh every single day.
Toby is crate trained and house trained, and he's equally happy on the couch, on his dog bed, or velcroed to your side. He loves having mental enrichment toys and has a particular gift for the surgical removal of squeakers and stuffing. He has done wonderfully with kids aged about 10 and up, though his size and enthusiasm may be a bit much for younger children. With other dogs, he's been great when introduced properly, and he's a quick learner through and through.
Toby's biggest growth area is on the leash. He walks best with a gentle leader and can be reactive toward other dogs and small critters when leashed. Continued, consistent leash training will be important for his next family, but with commitment, this is very workable for such a smart and willing dog.
Toby has more going for him than most dogs. He just needs someone willing to support his recovery, put in a little training work, and give him a soft place to land. If that sounds like you, Toby is ready to be your best buddy.
