Mixed Breed Dogs Available for Adoption in Fairfax, Virginia

HERSHEY

Mixed Breed
🇺🇸
Fairfax, Virginia
April 28th
female, small, adult

DESCRIPTION

At just 5.6 pounds, Hershey is a petite, senior sweetheart with a striking black-and-red coat and a serious talent for professional snuggling! When you first meet Hershey, she may hang back and watch you from a safe spot, as if she’s deciding whether you’re "her person." Give her a little time, speak softly, and let her make the first move. Once she decides you’re trustworthy, she’ll gently gravitate closer, maybe eventually hopping into your lap for a good, long cuddle. Because of her sensitive nature, Hershey does best with slow, calm handling. She appreciates people who let her come to them instead of rushing in for pets, move gently so she can see what’s happening before being picked up, and keep interactions predictable and kind so she can learn what to expect. Once she’s comfortable, Hershey is happy to accept almost any treat you offer!

Hershey has a few favorite hobbies that show off her sweet personality. She loves trotting around with stuffed and squeaky toys, proudly parading them like prized treasures. She’s a champion blanket-burrower, happiest when she can tuck herself under the covers until just her nose peeks out. Some of her best moments are spent curled up in your lap while you read, scroll, or watch TV. At night, she much prefers turning bedtime into "together time," snuggling next to you instead of snoozing in a crate.

Hershey previously lived with two other small dogs and did well when introduced to a larger dog of a similar low energy level here at the shelter. She may enjoy a home with other mellow, respectful canines. We recommend bringing any doggy family members to the shelter to meet Hershey prior to taking her home, to ensure she is a good fit for your pack! Hershey will do best with an adopter who understands that touch should be introduced slowly on her terms, giving her time to become comfortable before lifting or close contact. With a patient, understanding person who respects her pace and her boundaries, this tiny girl will blossom into a devoted, under-the-covers companion and loyal lap dog. If you’re looking for a small, gentle friend and you’re willing to let a nervous little heart build trust on her own timeline, Hershey is your perfect match!

This pet is eligible for an Adoption Audition! What is an Adoption Audition? It’s a 5-day, no-strings-attached, trial adoption period. You can take this pet home to try it out! Interested? Come to the shelter any time during open hours and talk to one of our Customer Care staff!

Be sure to check the "shelter information" box on the listing to see if the pet is located at our Michael R. Frey Campus (4500 West Ox Road, Fairfax) or our Lorton Campus (8875 Lorton Road, Lorton). ABOUT: MIXED BREED DOG BREED

The mixed breed dogs, often referred to as mutts, are a diverse and unique group with a blend of different characteristics from various purebred dog breeds. These dogs come from a mixture of lineages, resulting in a wide range of sizes, coat types, and temperaments. While each mixed breed dog is distinct in its own right, they are known for their resilience, adaptability, and often have fewer health issues compared to purebred dogs due to their genetic diversity. Mixed breed dogs make wonderful companions for families looking for a loyal and one-of-a-kind pet.
