Sailor is a gorgeous 3 year old, 92lb Great Dane, who came into our rescue after being rescued by EMS on the scene of a house fire. Poor girl was stuck in a kennel with other dogs when her owner's house caught on fire.
True to her Great Dane nature, Sailor is fiercely loyal to her people. She is a total goof ball, gentle although clumsy, loves to cuddle and very much enjoys being around dogs and kids. Like so many rescue Great Danes, Sailor is still working on building her confidence in new places and among new people. She can be nervous in new settings and would greatly benefit from an owner who is committed to continuing her training and exposure to the world.
She is a medium-energy dog who has spurts of very playful energy and big girl zoomies, but she is also a total lap dog and cuddle bug. She enjoys her walks but loves to cuddle for a while after.
Sailor is really excellent with small kids. She is fostered in a home with a 4 year old and really loves to be with the other small kids who come in and out of the house. She is very tolerant of kids running around, hugging her, and cuddling her. She isn't aware of her size, so she may inadvertently knock a kid over, but only out of trying to be silly and play, not out of aggression.
She is great with dogs of all sizes from a 10lb senior poodle mix to a 85lb pittie mix. Typical to Great Dane play, she doesn't always realize her size difference with small pups so she can come on a little strong if a small dog isn't super into playing and rough housing.
She does great in her kennel, but with any dog, as they adjust to a new home, she might take a day or two to settle into the routine. But, once she knows she is safe in her space, she likes to hang out in her crate when the door is open to get comfy.
While potty trained in her foster home, when she has done overnights in a temp foster home, she has pottied inside. Just takes her a bit to get used to the routine and figure out how to signal to her new people that she needs to potty.
Sailor is fairly good on leash - she uses a halti and tends to pull less when using this as opposed to a traditional leash. She can be skittish and loud noises or sudden movements definitely spook her, so a handler who can be confident and guide her through those situations is tantamount.
Overall, Sailor is a lovely, gentle Dane who will thrive in a home where her owners are dedicated to continued training and exposure. She is scared in new situations but does bond quickly with her new people. She is also extremely food motivated, making her a fun training buddy! Because of her behavior, we are prioritizing Great Dane experienced adopters.
Medical: Sailor does have an arrhythmia. We have had her evaluated by a cardiologist and the holter report showed a few abnormal heart beats but all within limits of normal findings. No long term treatment is indicated by the results. However, she did experience ventricular tachycardia when we tried to spay her upon intake. The surgery could not be completed. We will work with the adopter on an appropriate spay date prior to leaving our rescue.
