Socialization: Whether you're a stranger, a longtime friend, another dog, or even a cat, Penelope is ready to love you like family from the very first moment. Penelope has been experiencing life with other dogs for the first time. She can be a little tentative at first, but once she feels comfortable, she's been learning how to play and enjoys having canine companions around. Penelope previously lived harmoniously with cats.
Training: Penelope is still working on her house training, so she'll need a patient and understanding adopter who's willing to help her continue learning. She's also known to jump up when she meets new people or gets excited—her enthusiasm may be a bit much for smaller humans—so she'll benefit from some continued training and guidance to help her channel that excitement more calmly. On walks, Penelope's curiosity takes the lead—she loves to explore and may pull to investigate all the sights and smells. The good news is that her smaller size makes her manageable, and with a bit of consistent leash training, she'll only get better. NOTE: she was not a chewer (of personal property). She stuck to bones and squeaky toys.
Crate trained: Penelope is crate trained. She does not whine in the crate and will go there to lay down on her blanket (it's a safe space for her). She was kept in a crate in the foster home when the owner was away for any longer than 2-hours up to the time of a normal workday without any issues. She is currently not fully trustworthy all day long outside the crate unless someone is home.
Leash trained: Not sure how much she was walked previously but at her foster home, she went on daily morning walks with her 2 foster dog brothers. On walks, Penelope's curiosity takes the lead—she loves to explore and may pull to investigate all the sights and smells. The good news is that her smaller size makes her manageable, and with a bit of consistent leash training, she'll only get better.
Activity level/requirements: English setters have energy and Penelope is no different. She is walked once a day in her foster home, plays with her foster dog brothers, and plays with toys. She has a lively, energetic spirit and would do best in a home with a fenced yard where she can run, explore, and burn off that happy energy.
Fence requirements: Penelope gets the zoomies almost every day and runs them off in the backyard. A fenced in yard is a must. She didn't show any indication of jumping a fence but with her 2 foster brothers around, maybe had enough entertainment in the yard. She definitely could go from standing to jumping straight up in the air to a level above a 3' gate. She never jumped the gates in the foster home though.
Personality: Penelope is a sweet, speckled English Setter with a heart as big as her floppy ears—and at 6-years-young, she's the perfect mix of playful energy and loving companionship. She greets every day (and every person!) with a wagging tail and a joyful grin.
Health history: UTD on vaccinations, is spayed, microchipped, & on monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Tested negative for heartworm.
Foster comments: Penelope doesn't need perfection—just someone who sees her big heart and is ready to give her the structure, patience, and love she deserves. In return, she'll give you endless affection, loyalty, and plenty of joyful tail wags. She loyally laid by my side on days I worked from home, and greeted me with tail wags and kisses on days I came home from work. And she followed me around the house like I needed an escort at all times.

Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $75.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI). Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.
