Meet Eleanor, a 5-6 year old black lab mix. She’s a medium sized dog weighing approximately 45 lbs. She is spayed and up to date on her vaccines, and microchipped.
On March 15th, Eleanor started her rescue journey with Desert Paws. She was injured, suspected to have been hit by a car and left to fend for herself in the lonely desert.
She made her way to a house for help where she was taken in by animal control.
It was found that Eleanor had a dislocated hip and open wounds. Her wounds were treated, and her hip attempted to be put back in place. Sadly, it wouldn’t stay in place. She needed surgery the shelter couldn’t afford, and was placed on euthanasia list unless picked up by a rescue.
Cue Desert Paws. Eleanor was spotted on the Pima Co Animal Control website by our director who set a plan in motion. That was a Saturday, and Sunday a volunteer drove to pick her up as soon as they opened. She was so scared, so timid, and didn’t know what was happening. But she was on her way to recovery.
Eleanor was taken to our vet, had more X-rays to confirm her injuries. Surprisingly, everything else looked Great! She’d need a FHO (femoral head ostectomy) to remove the head of her femur. This surgery relieves pain for the animal by removing the source, and allowing muscle tissue to cushion the joint.
While waiting for her surgery, she spent time in her foster home, learning that the outside world doesn’t have to feel scary. While initially having to be carried outside (due to fear, not inability to walk), she learned to love feeling the soft grass under her feet, not the hot and hard asphalt and desert floor.
After her surgery, she spent time with a new foster who has experience with rehabbing dogs after FHO surgery. She did great! When her recovery was complete, she returned to her original foster home-and to her foster cat siblings! You see, Eleanor Loves cats, and kittens!! She even fancies herself a kitten momma with all the kittens in her home!
Eleanor, also loving referred to as Ellie, is a very sweet, affectionate, eager to please dog. She is looking for a forever loving home with a family to call her own. Her ideal home would be calm, not too loud, have someone home to spend time with the majority of the day-however, she is fine in a crate while you’re gone. She would love to have grass to run and roll around in, as well as to chase the occasional fly. She likes to go for short walks and does well traveling by car. She lives in a home with teens and enjoys attention from them, as well as the resident cats. She’s a definite couch cuddler and loves to do whatever You’re doing! She is very smart and has good manners with current training. Ellie still needs time and support to build her confidence, and would be best placed with someone who has experience with dogs. She has made an Incredible amount of progress and it’s important to keep that going for
