Opal - American Foxhound Dog for Adoption in Blanch, North Carolina

New home needed for VRRs Opal, (formerly Mama Jean of our Blue Jeans litter). She currently lives in Guilford County with the family that adopted her from us in 2022. This is what her Mama wrote about this sweet girl.

It is with a heavy heart that we are looking for a new home for our beloved Foxhound Opal. Our increasingly chaotic lifestyle, lack of time at home and Opals newfound love of hunting our pet chickens has led us to circumstances where we can no longer provide the time and type of home she needs and deserves.

Opal is a five year old purebred American Foxhound who weighs approximately 35 pounds. She is friendly, silly, and full of energy but also has no problem absolutely relaxing and sleeping for hours and hours.

We adopted Opal four years after she was rescued from rural NC by the wonderful folks at Vintage Racers for Rescues. When we brought her home, she was absolutely terrified of all people, new scenarios, and loud noises. She had just finished nursing a litter of puppies and was ready for a fresh start. Opal has blossomed into completely different dog from the anxious and frightened young hound we brought home. Now she acts as though shes never met a stranger and she loves exploring new places and situations. She is confident and sweet and full of personality.

Opal loves other dogs, loves to play and run, and hiking alongside me on the leash. She loves to sleep in a tiny little ball on the couch, bed or wherever we let her! She loves riding in the car and going to both Tractor Supply and dog parks.

She is spayed, UTD on all shots, has a brand new Soresto collar, recently had a full dental work up and cleaning, and has no health problems. She is heart-worm negative.

Opal is crate trained, house trained and gets along well with other dogs, horses, cows, and children. Opal has discovered that she can kill chickens and cannot be kept with birds or small rodents. She has lived with our indoor/outdoor cat for four years with zero issues but our cat has never run from her. I could see her chasing a skittish cat.

She will often sleep for 12-14 hours a night and will fall asleep within minutes of getting in the car. She loves to sun herself on the deck.

She is not food aggressive, but in typical hound dog fashion, she does like to counter surf and you must keep any human food out of her reach. We also use a dog-safe trash can so her strong hound nose doesnt lead her to exploring the garbage.

Opal knows her name but does not have a strong recall. She will eventually come back but she does not respond if you call her. She does best in a fenced in area.
